John Albert Reminis

Competitor in Skill: Bakery
Country: Australia

How did you get interested in your skill?
I first got involved with the baking industry by working weekends and school holidays at Mum and Dad’s bakery and I just fell in love with the trade. As school was not really for me, I decided to leave after completing Year 10 and work full time at my parents’ bakery.

Where did you do your training for your skill?
TAFE NSW Illawarra Institute, Wollongong Campus

How did you first find out about your Member organization and its programs?
I became involved with WorldSkills Australia in 2011 as a first year apprentice at TAFE. I can recall my TAFE teacher and WorldSkills enthusiast, Charles Janzen saying to me that I had really good hand skills in moulding bread so he recommended me to do the competition. As I was the youngest at the comp, I didn’t expect to win so when I was told I had won the regionals I was surprised and excited for what my future would hold.

Who influenced you to pursue your skill as a career?
My mum and dad.

What is your experience in participating with your Member organization?
My experience competing with my member organisation has been really good, they have looked after me and pushed me to achieve and also train hard.

Describe your most memorable moment so far with WorldSkills?
My most memorable moment with world skills is winning my national competition in 2014 in Perth Australia.

Describe what your experience has been since your involvement with WorldSkills
My experience so far with world skills has been really great, its taken me on a 5 year journey and each year giving me a goal, whether it be regional, nationals and now international!

Did participating in the skills competitions and training for WorldSkills help you progress in your skill? Please describe.
First and foremost, WorldSkills Australia has helped me to gain confidence in myself socially and in creating new friendships and connections with passionate and dedicated people. It has helped push me to be better at my job. In doing so, this has enabled me to improve my techniques to ensure that I am kept up to date with world class methodology. Lastly, I am grateful that WorldSkills Australia has opened up doors to contacts with well-respected members of the baking industry, who I have immeasurably learned from over the years.

What do you currently do? Where do you work?
I currently work for my parents at Bakehouse Delights in nowra Nsw, I still love working in our small bakery, and I have so much opportunity there to train, practice and try new things.

What are your future career aspirations?
My long term career goals are to train young apprentices for competitions and contribute to keeping Australia on the international stage. Another long term goal of mine for the future would be to own my own bakery.
