Ceremonial Session at the Municipal Council honouring WorldSkills São Paulo 2015

18 May 2015

A Ceremonial Session at the São Paulo Municipal Council honouring WorldSkills São Paulo 2015, was held on 14 May 2015. Brazil will host the 43rd WorldSkills Competitionfrom 11-16 August 2015, the greatest vocational education and skills excellence Competition in the world. More than 130 people were present at the Ceremonial Session, including directors from SENAI - National Service for Industrial training, the WorldSkills São Paulo 2015 Competition Organizer and representatives from the São Paulo Municipal Council.

The event was promoted by Municipal Councillor José Police Neto (PSD) who also presented Bill 0537/2014, which implements the Vocational Education Municipal Day in São Paulo. Rafael Lucchesi, SENAI General Director, Walter Vicioni, SENAI Regional Director and Frederico Lamego, CEO WorldSkills São Paulo 2015, also participated in the Ceremonial Session.

The Municipal Councillor began the session by highlighting the need to promote discussions in society about the type of education that should be promoted in Brazil, because although the country has achieved education universalization and important improvements, the lack of quality is still a challenge. "Today we should consider the fact that companies demand quality training for their professionals and youth must be prepared for the labour market." Police Neto concluded by saying that "Educational training for trades, technologies, and service-oriented careers transforms professionals into experts, that are almost irreplaceable for processes, while university education provides a broader vision of these same processes."

Rafael Lucchesi, SENAI General Director, believes it is extremely important for Brazilian political leaders to understand the importance of vocational education for youth and economic development. "When social and political leaders like Councillor José Police Neto give due importance to vocational education, the need to rethink our educational matrix also gains strength. Over 80% of youth in Brazil do not enrol in universities, and enter the labour market with poor quality basic education and no vocational training. "

"We struggle daily to change this reality, and this becomes even more effective with the WorldSkills Competition held in Brazil. This is a strategic agenda, not only for citizens but also for competitiveness and labour productivity. When we provide opportunities for youth, they reward us with talent, determination and strength and this is our goal while preparing our Competitors, “mentioned Lucchesi.

Frederico Lamego, CEO of WorldSkills São Paulo 2015, mentioned that this Competition will be the greatest since 1950 as it includes a larger number of Competitors and participating countries and regions, and there will also be several important side events like the Conference Programme, gathering world leaders in industry, education and government to discuss the future of trades, technologies, and service-oriented careers and how to motivate youth for this type of education.

"We will also have various types of technologies available for young people, attracting them and promoting awareness about the professional market opportunities, presenting the professions of the future and creating a modern and updated Competition environment," concluded Frederico.

The Consul General of Belgium in São Paulo, Didier Vanderhasselt, also participated in the presentation, demonstrating the Competition´s international profile; Councillor Valdecir Cabrabom; and the Special Secretary for Tourism Affairs and CEO at Anhembi Park, Wilson Poit, also emphasized that "WorldSkills São Paulo 2015 innovations will provide a legacy for vocational education in Brazil and overall development in São Paulo."

WorldSkills Competition is held every two years. Approximately 1,200 registered Competitors from 63 countries and regions and 200,000 visitors are expected to participate. WorldSkills São Paulo 2015 will occupy the entire Anhembi Park, a total 213,000 m², which is the greatest area occupied by a single event at the venue. This will be the first time that the WorldSkills Competition will be held in South America.
