Damien Dekker

  • Age: 20 years

Competitor in Skill: Graphic Design Technology
Country: Netherlands

How did you get interested in your skill?
Ever since I was borne I’d like to draw and be creative, so I knew that when I am older I wanted to do something with that. So when I was looking for a study I came across Graphic Design, that was the closest thing to what I wanted to do, so I took a shot at it and since then I’m still loving my work.

Where did you do your training for your skill?
The last couple of month I am an internee in a Marketing/Communication office where I learn a lot and every week I have 1 day of school where I train with my expert.

How did you first find out about your Member organization and its programs?
When I was asked to be on the competition, at the preliminaries. Before that I knew nothing about it.

Who influenced you to pursue your skill as a career?
My family, but my brothers and sisters the most. They told me that I need to pursue my dreams and don’t stop with I was doing, like most of them did.

What is your experience in participating with your Member organization?
I don’t have a lot of experience, it is all new for me.

Describe your most memorable moment so far with WorldSkills?
The first meeting of Team Netherlands was the most memorable moment so far. That was the moment when I knew that it was getting serious.

Describe what your experience has been since your involvement with WorldSkills
It’s hectic, but for a good cause. At the end it’s them who plan and organize all of this just for us. And I have learned a lot more about my skill.

Did participating in the skills competitions and training for WorldSkills help you progress in your skill?
Please describe.
Yes, it did. We all get a certain period of time to work and we have to work faster, therefore I’m training a lot to be quicker but still can achieve the same goals as when I would work on a normal tempo. So far it’s going well.

What do you currently do? Where do you work?
I’m a fulltime student, but currently I’m an internee at a Marketing/Communication bureau.

What are your future career aspirations?
For know I don’t have a lot of future career aspirations. But I’m enjoying my student life and won’t stop studying until I’m good at Graphic Design, Film and Photography. So when I’m good at all those things I will be a “triple threat”.
